From playing in the streets to Nigeria U-20: how 1xCup changed Clinton Lawani’s life

Sat, 6th Jun, 2026

Just a year ago, Clinton lawani was not known outside of his local area. He was a goalkeeper playing in an amateur team and training where they were no spectators and playing matches where they were no cameras but everything changed with one tournament - the 1xCup 2024.

Clinton traveled to the tournament in Lagos with his team, Ilupeju Ekiti Pillars FC.

And what started as a simple game turned into a chain of different events that transformed the player's life.

A ticket to Lagos

When Clinton found out that his community was going to send a team to the 1xCup he did not have high expectations about its. Before the tournament came the goalkeeper was hardly ever in the face of the public. He was not in a stadium, had no audience, and there was no one to judge how good he was.

But Lawani still believed in himself. “It was a good opportunity to showcase my talents,” he says now.

The first matches he played the goalkeeper just had one purpose in his mind and it was to help the team get to the next stage. At this point he was not thinking about whether scouts were watching or if he's professional future was going to be determined and it was precisely this approach free from unnecessary expectations and we total commitment that prove to be the right way to play.

The moment when everything changed

Clinton recalls clearly the moment when everything changed from being a regular game as cameras appeared people were now standing on the side lines and were watching and these were not just fans but professionals where analyzing every movements.

“When I saw camera crews filming and scouts watching the game, I realized: these matches aren’t just for the team, but also for my future,” the goalkeeper recalls.

The highlight of that tournament was the game that they played against City sport FC. They went on to beat their opponents on penalties and cleansing was named the man of the match which was his first official recognition in the tournament.

Scouts, clubs, and new horizons

Ilupeju Ekiti Pillars FC we're not able to make it into the round of 16 I still eliminated but that was only the end for the team but not for Clinton lawani because shortly after the 1xCup finished, two clubs approached him and the first was Sporting Lagos and the other was 36 Lions.

According to the goalkeeper, he did not even realize that he was been scouted onto the very last moment.

“Honestly, I didn’t know someone was watching,” he says. “And yet, it happened.”

This is where the true value of 1xCup comes to mind it's a tournament that creates an environment where the best talents can show themselves and be spotted and players can get the opportunity of a lifetime.

Price of moving up to the next level

But professional football showed Clinton no mercy because at amateur level he could make mistakes and they could be forgotten after the final whistle it blown but professionals have to analyze every decision such as coming off the line, positionally, reactions, and communication with the defense. The pressure is greater, the pace is faster, and professional football demands are tougher.

“The hardest part wasn’t the physical side, but the mental one,” he admits. “Staying disciplined, dealing with pressure, and believing in yourself when it feels like you’re not quite ready.”

It is this qualities that according to lawani at key strengths of his: composure under pressure, control of the penalty area, quick reactions, reading the game, and communicating with the defenders.

And most importantly is his ability to stay calm and not feel pressureed or not panic even in intense moments.

Another door

In the spring, it was announced that Clinton Lawani was going to be joining the Nigerian under 20 national team training camp ahead of the WAFU U-20 championship as they will be competing for a spot in the under-20 Africa cup of Nations.

For Lawani, this is not the end of the road.

“The U-20 team isn’t the final destination; it’s just another door,” the goalkeeper says.

It took him less than 2 years to go from playing in a local tournament in Lagos to being in the eye of the coaches of his youth national team.

However behind all of this steps was one turning point and it was the 1xCup 2024.

Message to those who will take to the pitch in 2026

For those who will be taken to the pitch in the next edition Clinton has a message for the players that will be taken parts in the 1xCup 2026: “Come prepared. And show not only your skills, but also your discipline.”

He hopes that for some players, the tournament is going to be a starting point for them just as it was for him during the 1xCup 2024.

“Train hard when nobody’s watching. Stay humble when everyone is. Be strong, be courageous. When your chance comes, don’t let it slip away,” Clinton advises.

Clinton lawani's story is not about just making headlines but about having the right platform, engaging at the right time, and turning from a local talent into a professional opportunity.

That’s exactly what makes the 1xCup so valuable.
