What you need to know about the ongoing saga between Newcastle and Alexander Isak?

Sun, 24th Aug, 2025

The 2025 Summer Transfer window has to be the craziest one so far. It has been characterized with dream moves, hijacks, and unexpected twists. From Porto’s surprise signing of Luuk de Jong to Arsenal hijacking Eberechi Eze from Tottenham and much more, we have almost seen it all in this window.

What is even more surprising than all that is the current saga between Newcastle and their star striker Alexander Isak.

JeoTips reports that Liverpool made a bid for Alexander Isak and it was going to be one of the biggest sales for Newcastle with initial reports suggesting 100 million pounds. Liverpool made their intentions clear that they wanted him and it already looked like Newcastle were going to sell because they were now linked with Hugo Ekitike.

Everyone believed Newcastle’s desire to sign Ekitike was because they were already sure they were letting Isak go.

In an unexpected twist of events, Liverpool signed Ekitike for a fee reported to be around 95 million pounds. This was even before they tabled a transfer request for Isak.

We all expected that with the signing of Ekitike (and Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Kerkez), Liverpool had spent enough and would not be looking for any additions. These signings were big money moves with Florian Wirtz breaking the British transfer record being bought for 150 million pounds.

The Merseyside team surprised us all, tabling a bid of 120 million for Isak. It was shocking to see Newcastle reject the bid.

And frankly there was no plausible cause. First, the bid was even more than the original valuation for the player and second, the player already informed the club of his interest to leave and join Liverpool.

So, why reject such an offer?

For a player of Isak’s potential, there are concerns that missing this opportunity would make it go forever.

To protest the club’s position, Isak has decided to draw a line in the sand.

He has refused to take part in Newcastle training over the last month, missed 6 of the club’s pre-season games, the tour in Asia, the Sela Cup, and Newcastle’s opening Premier League fixture vs Aston Villa.

It was not until Wednesday, 20th August, when he was announced as part of the PFA team of the season that he made his first public announcement via Instagram beginning with the statement, “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship cannot continue…”

From his announcement, it is clear Isak does not see any future where he continues playing for Newcastle because they’ve broken his trust and the promises made to him.

While fans and the football community were pondering on what promises were made to Isak, Newcastle released a statement in response suggesting that there was never a point when they made a promise suggesting he could leave this summer.

The statement further suggested that there were conditions Newcastle expected to be met before the deal goes on and as at the time of writing this post, those conditions have not been met.

While it is not clear what the conditions are, one of the major points that the club made when Liverpool submitted their 120 million pounds bid for Isak on August 1 was that they were only going to sell Isak if they found a replacement for him.

And Ekitike was supposed to be that replacement but Liverpool already signed the Frenchman. The alternative Newcastle went for in Benjamin Sesko was scooped by Manchester United who even offered 85 million pounds, 10 million less than what Newcastle were willing to pay for the RB Leipzig striker.

One thing is worthy of note and it is the fact that Isak is still under a contract at Newcastle and his refusal to play for the club because he is insisting on joining Liverpool has been seen as an act of rebellion and a breach of contract.

There is still three years left on Isak’s contract and helping the team in the games leading to the close of the transfer window would have been a show of good faith.

A fan on X commented that Isak should have coordinated himself like Xavi Simmons who has been clear about his intentions to join Chelsea but has continued to play and train with RB Leipzig.

Another fan pointed out that Newcastle fans are unhappy with Isak but excited about Wissa. If you did not know, Wissa is actually pulling a similar stunt as Isak to leave Brentford for Newcastle.

But that’s besides the point.

If truly, Newcastle’s condition for letting Isak go was a replacement, then they must have found it in Nicolas Jackson. The Chelsea striker has lost his place in the starting 11 at West London club with the signings of Jaoa Pedro and Ipswich’s Liam Delap.

They also have a Prem proven striker in Watkins who can go for cheaper than what Chelsea could be asking for Jackson.
